Vintage 1968 Glycine Airman Special Pilot's Watch withDivers All SS Case, Box, Paper

  

The AS 2063 automatic movement runs about 4 minutes slow by the end of its approximate 43 hour power reserve period. The hack feature does not work. Given that the movement runs a bit slow, that the hack feature does not work and considering its unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.

This seldom seen vintage 1968 Glycine Airman Special, which came from the estate of its original owner, has a lovely matte black "-T- SWISS MADE -T-" signed dial and the lume, which remains fully intact and emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a warm buttermilk hue. Majority of the imperfections seen are on the crystal, not the dial. The all stainless steel bezel, which retains nearly all of its original enamel paint and rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension once the bezel lock (bottom crown) has been unscrewed, presents beautifully. The all stainless steel case shows minor wear with no visible signs of oxidation.

The outer edge of the case back is stamped "STAINLESS STEEL AUTOMATIC WATERPROOF INCABLOC SWISS" with PAT. 314050,323.1119" and "947028 stamped along the inner edge. The serial number corresponds to 1968.

The crystal shows scratching and dust/debris on its underbelly. While I normally show pictures of the movements of watches I put up for sale considering that the case back on this watch requires a press to be properly secured I won't be removing it. The semi-quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. Crown 39 full revolutions the. Movement ran about 4 minutes slow by the end of its approximate 43 hour power reserve period. This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40 mm including the crown and approximately 20 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 8.5 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm.

Interestingly this watch comes on a comparable looking but non-expandable bracelet and endlink combination to the Fixo-Flex band setup that originally came with the Airman. I've never seen this particular bracelet and endlink combination before.

Without knowing the history of this watch I don't know its story and how it made its way onto this watch. Given how similar the bracelet/endlinks look to the original setup it's possible they may have been Glycine service replacements.

I'd guestimate that it won't fit a greater than 6.75 inch wrist. The original wood box with foam pads and uncompleted guarantee/manual show wear.

The box slides open and closes shut without issue. More pictures of this ephemera will be happily provided upon request. Given that the movement runs slow, that the hack feature does not work and considering its unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.
