It has some finish wear, dings and scratches, but overall very, very nice condition for 53 years old! The body has the older style sunburst spray pattern on the back (the black outline follows the body shape by the neck pocket), and it shows light finish checking here and there, so I believe this body was made early enough in 1969 to get a nitro finish (Fender made the switch in mid-69 to poly).
The original pickups sound incredible. It has multi-colored original cloth wiring and a "rainbow chicklet" capacitor, which was common in the late'60s. The solder joints are virgin and untouched. The pickups were stubborn to take out of the cavities (and pull away from the old foam underneath them) to photograph the codes on the bottoms - I have no doubt I'm the 1st person to remove them since this bass left the factory.
The neck has a great feel to it and medium/low action. The truss rod is functioning, but it doesn't have much room to tighten it any more than it is now, and I didn't want to push it. I also put a couple shims under the neck that I cut out of business cards to be able to lower the action at the bridge as much as possible. The bass is set up nicely now and plays well. The frets are all original with only minor wear and plenty of life left.Ser #: 239XXX (late1968/early 1969). Neck Stamp: 7 APR 69 A. (31st week of 1966), which is normal for a'69. Fender bought a huge supply of pots in'66 and used them up over the next several years.
Solder is obscuring the code on the tone pot but it is original and matches the other 2 pots exactly, both construction and patina. (last digit indicates the year of manufacture - 1969). The code on the neck pick is too light to read clearly, but both pickups are obviously original and match each other exactly.
They both have their original (heavy Formvar) windings and correct green bobbins, potted in lacquer. The original case is in useable condition, but shows wear.
There's a chunk of the plywood lifting up in one corner (see pic). The case logo is broken but it is the'66-70 style logo (no tail).
The case has unusual yellow interior, which I was told is an original Canadian import case. I see no evidence this is not the original lining. Check out my other listings for more cool bass stuff! I will respond to all emails as soon as possible.
